Collège Doctoral International

International Graduate SchoolThere are about 3,000 PhD students in Brittany's eight doctoral schools. The Collège Doctoral International (CDI – International Doctoral College) pools and coordinates the international activities of doctoral training in Brittany.

International missions

The CDI's mission is the pooling and coordination of international activities related to doctoral training in Brittany in order to develop and strengthen the prestige and international attractiveness of the region's universities and grandes écoles. It is committed to promoting international openness, thus encouraging future PhDs to have as wide a vision as possible by taking advantage of inspiring opportunities for support and exchanges of the highest quality in scientific research and international missions.

Doctoral schools

There are about 3,000 PhD students in Brittany's eight doctoral schools.
These educational and research structures have a dual mission -

  • To organise training for PhD students and to prepare them for post-doctoral employment
  • To coordinate the various research teams within the framework of a coherent scientific project

Role of the doctoral schools (EDs - Écoles Doctorales)

The doctoral schools (EDs) offer their PhD students scientific training provided by recognised research teams, training programmes which help them to manage their research project and to develop their career plan, an international experience, the opportunity to do an internship in a professional environment, and the monitoring of their post-doctoral employment.

Administration of PhD training courses

  • The EDs' pooled resources enable them to operate more effectively in bringing their support and involvement in:
  • The registration of PhD students under the terms stipulated by the Ministerial Order of 7 August 2006
  • The awarding of PhD grants, research grants, and the payment of PhD students. The EDs are responsible for the examination of applications for both personal and project funding
  • The supervision and training of PhD students in coordination with the management of the doctoral schools
  • The logistical organisation of training programmes to accompany thesis preparation as and when requested by the EDs
  • The development of doctoral training-related regional, inter-regional, European, and international cooperation
  • The promotion of best practice in doctoral supervision and training, especially as concerns the thesis charter. 

Preparation for career development

  • The formulation and monitoring of indicators and statistics concerning PhD students, relating to both their PhD training and their career development.
  • The preparation of PhD graduates for career development, and in particular the provision of help with job seeking, e.g. skills assessment, personal and professional projects, the writing of a C.V. and covering letter, preparation for a job interview, knowledge of the business world, modern languages, and communication techniques.
  • The enhancement of the standing of the doctoral schools and of the status of the PhD holder in the social, economic and professional environment, e.g. through educating and informing the business world, through forums for debate and discussion, and through the recognition of personal and professional skills in the Nouveau Chapitre de la Thèse (NCT - New Chapter of the Thesis).
